Benefits of ASOC membership include:

· Monthly Newsletter with information on ASOC and other events in the Canberra district
· Discounts at various art supply and framing shops in the district – see Member Benefits page for further information

· Monthly meetings with an activity such as tutor demonstration, talk, demonstration, etc
· SAE, Workshops, Exhibitions and other events
· Opportunity to meet other artists and art lovers to share knowledge and skills
A more comprehensive list of benefits is available on the Member Benefits Page.

Members’ General Monthly Meetings are held on the last Thursday of each month, except December. These commence with a business meeting at 6:30 pm followed by an activity at 7pm. See Meetings for further information..

Visiting tutors often attend the meeting giving a demonstration or talk. There is a gold coin admission fee to general meetings, to cover the cost of refreshments and other expenses associated with the meeting.

The Society’s library is open at the monthly meetings for all members and provides access to books on all mediums as well as monthly magazines. There is often a Trading Table where members bring in and sell items they no longer need with the proceeds going to the Society.

A Newsletter is published every second month which details Society activities and provides information on workshops, forthcoming exhibitions and other information of relevance to artists in the Canberra area. All financial members of ASOC are either emailed or posted a copy of the Newsletter at the beginning of every second month. Newsletters can also be found on this website, under Newsletters.

The Workshop Programme for the year is published in January or February. Workshops are tutored by established and experienced artists with a national reputation. Workshops may be one, two, three or four days duration. See Workshops for further information.

Participation in workshops is open to all members and non-members, but places are limited and people must book in advance. Places are allocated on a ‘first come first served’ basis. Fees for workshops vary depending upon the associated costs, including fees charged by the tutor, accommodation, venue hire, model hire and expenses associated with bringing the tutor to Canberra.

Regular day classes and Groups are also available. See Newsletter for details.

New Members are invited to put their name down to help about once a year at our general meetings with the welcome desk, supper or trading table, a great way to get to know the other members.

We also have many committees dealing with Summer Art Experience (SAE), exhibitions, excursions, workshops etc. Please join in and be part of the fun and activities. Without the generosity of all our members we would not able to provide, the functions we do!!

Since January 2001 ASOC has run the
SAE which is held in Canberra and consists of approximately 15 week-long concurrent workshops in various media. This event is one of the highlights of our year. The SAE is advertised nationally in spring, participants come from all over Australia and overseas. Early bookings are advised to secure a place. It has become an important part of the Community Education in Canberra and is now an accepted part of the general happenings in this city.

The Society’s Annual Spring Exhibition and Sale is held in September each year at the historic Albert Hall with hundreds of paintings on display. Prizes are also awarded in all categories and we would encourage you to enter this exhibition.

In 2007 we held our Inaugural Autumn Exhibition, which was a great success! In contrast to the Spring Exhibition, it has no Categories or Judging. It is purely an exhibition and sale of paintings and for the first time Sculpture will be incorporated into both Exhibitions. At last!

Excursions to galleries or other events of interest to artists are often organised by ASOC. Painting holidays to locations suitable for painting ‘en plein air’ are also arranged and previous holidays have included the Flinders Ranges, Tasmania and Lake Mungo, and last year we went to Lake Conjola, which was beautiful.

If you have any information on art events or forthcoming workshops that would be of interest to our 300 members, or anything else you would like to put in our Newsletter, please contact the Newsletter Editor.

The Committee welcomes your comments and suggestions and looks forward to your active participation in the Society.
