Monthly Meeting

Venue: ASOC Studio at 21 Blaxland Cres, Griffith  ACT 2603
Time: 2:30 pm

Activity: Peggy Spratt “Aboriginal Art in the Northern Territory”

Peggy tells us: “In August 2011, I went to the Northern Territory with some of the other voluntary guides from the National Gallery.

Our first stop was the Cobourg Peninsula to see some of the sensational rock art. We then had some time in Darwin visiting galleries and enjoying the Telstra Awards for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art and that was followed by a trip across Arnhem Land visiting the communities of Maningrida, Elcho Island and Yirrkala.

Each of these communities has internationally known artists and it was a privilege to spend time with them and to learn first hand some of the stories that are represented in their art. As well as the art it was a wonderful, although sometimes confronting, opportunity to see what life is like in these communities.”

Peggy is a very interesting speaker and she will illustrate her talk with photos she took on this fascinating trip.

Monthly Meeting

Venue: ASOC Studio at 21 Blaxland Cres, Griffith  ACT 2603
Time: 2:30 pm

Activity: Tricia Wheatstone and Joan Costanzo “Abstract Art; Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask.”

Tricia and Joan are members of the Friday Abstract and Experimental Workgroup and in this session will share their insights into the act of creating abstract art. They will illustrate this with works of their own, and they will be joined by other members of the workgroup displaying additional works.

There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and enter into discussion. If you have tried your hand at abstract art or would like to have a go, or would simply like to gain a better understanding of how others go about this challenging genre, do come along!
